Mesquite Creek Jerky Co. – Bloody Mary Beef Jerky

Bloody Marys are one of my favorite cocktails. I’ve always enjoyed tomato juice, so the opportunity to make it spicy and add some booze and fun garnishes is something I can’t pass up given the opportunity. When I saw that Mesquite Creek had a Bloody Mary flavor for their jerky it was one of the big reasons I decided to place an order with them.

Looking at the ingredients this has a lot of flavors that I love – tomato, celery, horseradish, garlic, onion, lime, clam, the list goes on. Like other Mesquite Creek jerky the texture is very dry and chewy, more in line with a carne seca than a more tender style of jerky. I enjoy both types, and for snacking the dryer style like this can be nice as it takes a little bit more work and you consume fewer calories than with the fattier variety.

The celery seed is the first flavor that you taste and it does dominate a bit. I enjoy celery seed, after all growing up in the Mid-Atlantic Old Bay is ubiquitous and celery seed is a major component there. You can taste the tomato and horseradish as well, though perhaps the clam juice is just a background umami note along with the MSG. This flavor isn’t very spicy, there’s a little kick, but I could certainly use more heat. This Bloody Mary jerky is still quite tasty though and it the lack of heat didn’t stop me from going through the back over the course of a day at work.

I can recommend this one, especially if you like the flavor of celery seed. I’ll be ordering another bag with my next order from the company, as I think a slab of it would make quite a nice garnish in a Bloody Mary or a michelada.
