Taste of Immokalee – Serrano Hot Sauce

What’s better than a delicious sauce that’s also for a good cause?
Taste of Immokalee is produced as part of a student entrepreneurship program in the economically disadvantaged community of Immokalee, FL.
Immokalee is home to a large number of migrant farm laborers and is a major production center of tomatoes. This sauce isn’t tomato-based, but rather features the Serrano pepper, a personal favorite of mine, and one that’s very popular with the Mexican and Central American migrant laborers who bring their cultural vitality with them to Immokalee.
The sauce itself is intensely savory, with the Serrano flavor coming forward to the front followed by garlic and black pepper. The consistency is medium-thin with some small chunks, but it’s still a very free-flowing sauce that’s easy to slather all over your favorite foods.
This does pair well with Mexican food, but also works exceedingly well as a breakfast sauce with eggs, and with chicken wings and strips. While I haven’t had the opportunity to try it yet, I have a feeling it would also be an excellent pairing with pork chops.
